Quantifying sediment transfer between the front of an active alpine rock glacier and a torrential gully

چکیده
The present contribution describes results from the quantification of transferred sediment volumes between the front of an active rock glacier and a torrential gully. The focus is set on the methodological approach which combines terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) generated digital terrain models (DTM) and geodetic field surveys. The aim is to compare high resolution DTMs from different dates in order to calculate volume gain and loss in the system for different time intervals. As the object of the study is a fast moving landform, other sources of information such as geodetic measurements (GPS) were necessary to estimate the advance of the rock glacier during the same time intervals and to facilitate the interpretation of the TLS data. It was then possible to estimate sediment budgets in the whole scanned area for different time intervals. The results show an extensive erosion of the front (up to 5000 m/year) but also the presence of a temporary sediment storage area in the upper part of the torrential channel.

Geochemistry and Source Waters of Rock Glacier Outflow, Colorado Front Range
We characterize the seasonal variation in the geochemical and isotopic content of the outflow of the Green Lake 5 rock glacier (RG5), located in the Green Lakes Valley of the Colorado Front Range, USA. Between June and August, the geochemical content of rock glacier outflow does not appear to differ substantially from that of other surface waters in the Green Lakes Valley. Thus, for this alpine...

This contribution explores the internal structure of very small debris-covered glacier systems located in permafrost environments and their current dynamical responses to short-term climatic variations. Three systems were investigated with electrical resistivity tomography and dGPS monitoring over a 3-year period. Five distinct sectors are highlighted in each system: firn and bare-ice glacier, ...
متن کاملDriving Factors for Torrential Mass-Movements Occurrence in the Western Alps
To understand the behavior of torrential processes in the alpine environment, the conditions mainly responsible for the occurrence of these phenomena have to be identified and distinguished as predisposing and triggering factors. In this regard, this study is aimed to understanding which factors lead to the occurrence of a given torrential processes in alpine catchments in the Western Alps, whe...
متن کاملPermafrost Favorability Index: Spatial Modeling in the French Alps Using a Rock Glacier Inventory
In the present study we used the first rock glacier inventory for the entire French Alps to model spatial permafrost distribution in the region. Climatic and topographic data evaluated at the rock glacier locations were used as predictor variables in a Generalized Linear Model. Model performances are strong, suggesting that, in agreement with several previous studies, this methodology is able t...
متن کاملEstimation of Alpine Permafrost Surface Deformation Using InSAR Data
The detection of active rock glacier and the quantification of the observed surface movement as well as its temporal change using the D-InSAR method are presented. An average deformation rate of -7.7 mm/35 days in the radar lineof-sight, in the summer of 1992, was estimated. Whereas, the corresponding geodetic measurement, vertical component of 3D flow velocity, was about –8.0 mm/35 days. Addit...
